What are energy attribute certificates?
A energy attribute certificate is a tracking instrument that provides a unique statement representing the ownership rights to the environmental, social and other non-power attributes of renewable electricity generation. It verifies that one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated and fed into the grid from an eligible renewable energy resource (such as wind, solar, hydropower).
This is a flexible and cost-efficient solution to help meet renewable energy targets, in particular where self-generation of the renewable electricity, or its direct purchase through a Power Purchase Agreement, are not viable options.
Energy attribute certificates must always be sourced from the same grid from which electricity is consumed, and therefore different green energy certificates exist in different areas around the world: Guarantees of Origin (GOs) in Europe, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) in North America, International RECs (I-RECs) and Tradable Instruments for Global Renewables (TIGRs) in many countries around the world.
